First Steps

>Choose a name for your group that relates to your method of travel or your service work or both.
>Choose a role for each member of your group, including a leader. The leader will report your daily progress to the class near the end of each period. Once you’ve chosen your roles, you must begin immediately researching each aspect of the trip. The clock is always ticking and you must be productive each class period for you to create a complete and impressive proposal.

>Choose a country or region outside of the United States. You must consider everyone’s opinion, but you must come to a consensus quickly. You must consider: traveling dangers and annoyances, people or communities in need for your service work, average cost of traveling (Norway and Japan are expensive, Indonesia and India are inexpensive), availability of services like food, lodging, and public transportation.

>Choose a human-powered/muscle-powered activity you will do during your month traveling. Your choice must be agreeable and feasible to everyone in the group. You must consider: equipment (and the expense of equipment) you will need, physical conditioning, coordination, and fitness of your group, distances traveled, etc. Walking or hiking is slow, but requires less equipment than biking. Biking is faster, but requires the ability to handle a bike on paved or dirt roads.

>Choose one type of service work you will do during your month traveling. Again, your first consideration is helping those in need in the places you are traveling to. Determine the need and then determine what kind of help you will provide. What can you realistically provide? You can help farmers harvest crops, you can provide simple childcare at an orphanage, you can teach basic English (if they need or want to learn it), you can build a playground, you can do any number of simple tasks that do not require much equipment or expertise. Keep it simple.
